SolidWorks Corp online forum largely useless?

"The shear breadth of this newsgroup and the open format make me want to not partake in the SW "sponsored" group(s) at all. As far as I'm concerned, SW Corp should get off their asses and spend some time in here. We all know they're not working *that* hard on the code :)"

Joe Dunne use to post here all the time. Perhaps because someone was so nasty to Joe Dunne he stopped posting here ?

Frankly, I always found Joe Dunne to be very helpful and knowledgable. Didn't agree with some of what he had to say but thought it was a much better group because of his input. Felt the same about Robert Berger who did not use SolidWorks at all and enjoyed fairly civilized debate with Joe.

You can agree all you want but codling the person who was so abusive to Joe Dunne is another story.

Funny how I never had a problem getting along with Joe Dunne or someone like former Autodesk employee Dominic Gallello, huh ?

Imagine that.

Joe Dunne was the best friend of a SolidWorks user who needed better surfacing, etc. and someone who claims they want better surfacing in SolidWorks blasted the shit out of Joe Dunne for no good reason on a continuous basis.

No one here ever said a world.

What a freaking joke.

" I don't know to whom you are referring. "

That you don't is sad. Very sad.

I don't remember anyone riding Joe Dunne *relentlessly* with the exception of just one person who wanted to get paid for beta testing.

Lots of people disagreed strongly with Joe Dunne. Robert Berger certainly did... especially over the approach used in IronCAD with direct face modeling, which at the time Joe was very much opposed to. Don't know if Joe Dunne still holds the same view today.

Robert Berger knew better. So did the folks at IronCAD. Years later, direct face modeling tools finally made it into Parasolid. ACIS had them first. To this day, IronCAD does not have an automatic / interactive feature recognition tools like FeatureWorks because IronCAD management does not buy into what Joe Dunne was preaching at the time.... the entire model must always be able to fully update no matter what. IOW, the CAD program knows what's best for the user and must play babysitter all the time.

In talking with decent Autodesk personnel, (and they did have some... Dominic, Brenda Discher (sp?), etc.) they wanted nothing to do with this person because of how abusive he is. Nobody felt they could trust him either. After observing his tactics and behavior for I would guess at least five years in both the Autodesk and in this newsgroup I can completely understand why.

As you well know, I'm very, very critical of SolidWorks yet I have never experienced any difficulty in dealing with SolidWorks personnel.

Perhaps because I'm not abusive to them and instead focus on what I don't like in the product... and at times what I do like / like about the company ?

I give Joe Dunne a lot of credit for saying things like think3 spends too much money on R&D in this newsgroup. I don't agree with Joe but it's certainly an acknowledgement that Joe knows how serious think3 is about offering high level tools like Global Shape Modeling.

I'll say it again. Joe Dunne was a SolidWorks users best friend in this newsgroup especially if that SolidWorks user wanted changes that Joe could relate to being important. Joe Dunne was not someone who deserved to be treated like shit by the person who often posts about tools that are needed to improve surfacing.

"but I'm not coddling ANYONE -- at least not that I'm aware of."

You and many others have kissed his ass for ages and turned the other way in the face of his intolerance and abuse. You continue to do so. At this point, it's about what I expect from you and others.

Who asked you to ?

Who did you say it was that really loses because Joe Dunne does not post here any longer ?

"I've already pleaded for sanity in private"

He doesn't have the capability or the capacity to understand why someone like Joe Dunne is vital to SolidWorks Corp. / SolidWorks users. What he has is his ego and his obsession to control what he can't control.

You should take a look through Google to see the kinds of things he had to say about / to Joe Dunne. Unbelievable, no understanding whatsoever of how to work with someone like Joe. Just pathetic.

Put me in your newsgroup filter will ya, you really don't do well with handling this kind of reality. ;>) Neither does the other amigo.... especially the reality of $995 Concepts CATIA V4 file translations vs whatever the insane price for FormatWorks was. The price is so high I'm trying hard to forget about FormatWorks all together.

Let me get something out of enduring this torture with you and get a plug in for Concepts.

Thanks. :>)

Concepts ... see what ACIS can do for a CAD modeler. See surfaces and solids actually work smoothly together. Use spline tools that actually work. Have fun instead of engaging in hours or frustration. Download a free demo and have a go...

A brief search finds that Joe had this to say in response to jb:

"Exactly the limitied approach you scream so much about. Thanks for spreading pure propaganda. But I guess it will all magically get taken care of in the next rev...."

"I think that if we went through all of those conversations all of the issues brought up have already been addressed."

"You do not need FeatureWorks to work with and modify imported solid models. You can slice, dice, add features, etc...."

"You the same guys that were saying ACIS is the reason SE is superior to SW less than a year ago? Are you sure this time?

You are simply ignoring every point I made. "

That's about it, folks .

After all, it's not like you ever used or bought either. Or actually have a clue what they do. Or use SW or ANY 3D system either .... $15 for the old (used) BobCad DOS copy was it (for dimensioning 2D lines & circles because you don't even know trig)?

BTW, How do you then "translate" the Catia V4 data OUT of Concepts to SW?

I can say that I slammed Joe Dunne in a couple other forums for the sheer fact that he was selling not using. He was very defensive and offensive, in my opinion. He seemed to be trolling and when someone bad mouthed SW he jumped in and started his marketing spew. Unmatched assembly performance, most seats, pull up this assembly of cubes, blah blah blah. If you go to the SW forum on their site you have a very helpful person, Joy, that helps out all the time. It is a pity that she only helps with PDMWorks and Toolblotch.
