With most big turntables the wheelbase is the important number. There usually is no structure close to the table. Also in the real world they needed a little space to balance the engine on the table. Even though there were supports at both ends of the bridge they didn't like to really overload one end.

The way that I'd prefer to do the TT wiring is to make the loco go towards the roundhouse with one direction of the throttle and this is done with a split ring underneath or with the TT pit rails cut so that one end gets the south power, etc. Note that this doesn't work well with access tracks near the split area very well. Also, the power the TT track needs to be off (it better be unless you want a rolling loco!) as the TT goes across that section of rotation.
