HO Shays

Does anyone know of any reviews of the Bachman Shay models?

I'm looking into starting a logging layout, and I'd like to have one of each of the main types of locos - Shay, Heisler and Climax.

I already know which Climax I'm going to buy, and it looks like Rivarossi makes the only Heisler, which kinda narros that down, doesn't it?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

One little note. Logging operations tended to use only one type of loco as there are economies with such usage. It's a lot easier stocking parts for one type than for the several other types from different makers. Remember that these guys were out to haul logs to the marketplace rather than run a railroad. Some of them would buy a new loco of the same size just so that the guys running the railroad wouldn't have to worry about something new.

GW, I can tell you this. The Bachmann Shays run as well as any brass shay. I have several brass Shays that I have repowered with can motors and brass flywheels. I'm very fussy about realistic slow speed operation. The Bachmann is a very nice performer. Doug

I know - I've been reading a lot of books about.

I expect I'll be running the Climax mostly, especially as it'll be the first one I pick up.

I'm going to get the other two so that A) I'll have them and B) I can change them out or put them on other others as I increase the size of my layout.

The TimberTimes is a very good magazine, and I've gotten some great ideas from it.

Thanks for responding, too!

Thanks, Doug.

Like I said in my reply to Bob May, I'm planning on starting small, then expanding the layout and changing out the locos on occasion.

Lots of really cool stuff out there for logging and the lumber industry.

Now I just gotta convince the wife that I need that Shay... :)

I bought the Bachmann Shay right after it first came out. I have put Soundtraxx sound decoder/speaker in the tender and I have never had any problems with that. I had a rubber gomlet tear apart and so I bought an extra tender truck from Bachmann. Good service at a reasonable price for my mistake. I would definitely buy another one, if I needed it.

I have a Bachmann Shay which is equipped for DCC now. We adjusted the speed and it runs very very well. I also have two Ruivarossi heilsers. They run well too. bachmann is bringing out both a 2 and a 3-truck Climax either late this year or in 2005. It will be worth the wait if the Shay is any indication.

I saw that at the Walthers website.

I'll probably still get the LeFevere Climax, though - the Bachmann Shay will be purchased in a couple of months.

Thanks for the responses, guys!

I saw just this week on a website that the Climax has been canceled. I cannot recall where I saw it, but think it was on dealers website. Anyone else see this? I hope it isn't true, as I was looking forward to getting one as a companion to my Bachmann Shay.

I've just fired off a request to Bachmann for a Climax update (AND GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER!).
