Hydrocal

Cecil, Now its been many years but I seem to remember buying it at a standard building supply store, and I don't think it was a special order or anything. Things may be different now but why don't you give that a try first. Lynn

Hydrocal is the brand name for the USGypsum Corp. It is an exterior grade of plaster and is suitable for making castings of the garden gee-gaws that will live outside. Plaster of Paris is related but will melt in the rain. You can tell it by the greasy feel when it is wet after it has cured.

Ask for "Casting Plaster", it's the same stuff as "Hydrocal".

I'm the one that bought a 100 lb bag for $35 US in Syracuse, NY.

It's not that big of a bag--about 30" x 18" x 4". IF your area of coverage is small, then look up the local Model railroad club in your area or go to a hobby store. Look in the back of a Rail magazine for info. Lots of places nearby. Doug's trains in London for one.

Followed your link to UsGypsum site. Its impressive just how many type of "casting plasters" there are, all with perhaps subtle differences in properties that may make one a better choice than another depending on what your making. Surface porosity would seem to be important to us when it comes to coloring our rock castings. I am wondering what the general feeling is about this. Is higher surface hardness more desirable with respect to coloring rocks?

Most industrial pipe covering companies carry Hydrocal for glueing elbows and other fittings togeather that are usually made of CalSil material.

Call around and find the big insulation companies that do industrial boilers or refinery work.

Hydrocal B-11 has just gone up to $11 per 40 pound bag at my dealer.

And you wouldn't believe the other "supplies" that they have that can be used in scenry making. ( 8.00 for a 100 pound bag of the best street material EVER )
