inside rusty rails (HO) painting them

Hi all,

I have a good HO scale layout going in the 50's era. I want to paint or do something to the "unused" tracks and make them look rusty. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Do any painting to the sides of the rails but you unfortunately have to leave the tops alone along with a little bit of the inside head or the locos won't run on the track. You can use Blacken-it or other blackening solution or just paint the rails if the locos are not going to be running on that part of the layout and don't forget to make the rails of the turnout also the same weathering as nothing has run on those rails either.

Rust colour maybe, but did you ever see bright shiny rust? That phosphor bronze rail is brown but it is also very shiny and layouts made with it look unreal. Keith If you want to run on rusty rails you have to put batteries in your locos, then use steel rail and let nature take its course.

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Shawn,

I would just use some rail brown model paint applied with a Microbrush (brand)to the rails. Makes it fairly easy to apply.

Good luck!

Floquil has a rail brown paint however the best by consensus is just use "roof brown"! The rail brown is closer to fresh rust!

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Personally, I'm not crazy about the rail brown color. It looks to my eye to have almost a greenish tint. I would use maybe a combination of roof brown and a bit of black. Fresh rust, to me, is a LOT closer to orange. But that's me.

The color of rail varies quite a bit. Little-used track will be a strong rusty orange-brown. Mainline track is more of a gray brown to red-brown. The color of the local dirt and ballast both make a difference.
