July MR - Atlas Dash 8 Review

Hello all,

I wanted to solicit comments on MR's review of the Atlas Dash 8-40CW. What is really bothering me is the last paragraph stating to the effect "Atlas doesn't recommend MU'ing the Silver and Gold Series". Now, in normal DC mode, I can totally understand this as the starting voltages would be way different. The statement would also lead on to believe that you shouldn't do this in DCC mode either, which in my opinion, defeats one of the benefits of having DCC.

I do own two of each models, however have not have time to get them out of the boxes and put them on the layout (way too much yard work). I had bought two of each thinking that having two sounds units MU'ed together would be too much noise (not to mention cost). I had planned on have two sets, each with one gold and one silver series (with decoder) running on the layout.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

My guess this is one of those "Soup is hot when heated" warnings that manufacturers put on their packaging.

Try them out on the layout; if they work, great! If they make unconfortable noises then desist quickly before the smoke comes out. Any DCC fitted loco should work with any other DCC fitted loco.

I saw a bottle of Hickory Smoke flavor at the grocer's the other day: can I use this to replace the smoke if it gets out?

unconfortable

not unless it's magic smoke :)

No. It is factory pre-packed smoke that has escaped, it must be all put back for it to work again.

This is meant for use in automobiles but in a pinch I think it would work on the layout:

You can use it, but it is probably not prototypical for your RR. Did you research the botany of the Hickory in North America. Do industries along your RR use hickory? Did Old Hickory ever live near the tracks?

I especially liked this comment there:

Q: I have a fourteen year old son named Lucas who I have caught several times in the back of the garage smoking. Can this item help him to respect a little ...

A: Part of the problem may be the fact that you named your son after the Prince Of Darkness. Mayhaps you should be happy that all you have caught him doing ...

What size hammer are you intending to use?
