Would someone who reads this group on a daily basis post what kind of daily message volume they're seeing?
I'm seeing 20-30 messages a day. Seems low, and I recently had to change news servers. OTOH, everything I post seems to show up so maybe it's just the season.
That's about what it has been lately since the religious and political crackpots and trolls seem to be momentarially quiet as are the nitwits who respond to their lunacy.
Not several years ago when there was a fair amount of humour from participants which could defuse a lot of the ranting and the worst you had to look out for was the occasional missive from Geg.
But the do-gooders and net nannies had their way and eventually got rid of the humour, and Sherriff John who dealt with the sock puppets, and now they've got the newsgroup they deserve.
I don't recall that much of a problem. Especially compared to some other groups. I think there used to be close to 100 good posts every day.
The Yahoo groups may be causing part of the decline. They are closely focused on one aspect for the most part. Groups such as EarlyRail, HandLaidTrack, etc.. And I use and appreciate them. But a general purpose group such as r.m.r is also an asset. I hope it doesn't go away.
And I'm oftem bemused and dismayed by the number of people, otherwise computer-savvy, who have either never heard of Usenet or who turn up their noses at it. I suspect the latter group are deficient in reading/writing abilities, so they prefer pictures :-).
I'm waiting to see if the volume goes up when winter arrives in N.A..
As you can see from the archive on that page, the number of monthly posts has been in a decline (compared to the same period in the previous year) since the fall of 2002, with only two exceptions.

[This would be the point where Rathburne would typically insert a comparison of rec.models.railroad to Model Railroader magazine's circulation numbers.]
You just have to look at the list of 'this month's top posters' to see the problem, it's no longer an american group, many of the posts are cross posted from 'aus.model.rail' and who would want to read that more than once. I believe he meant that where Americans post, they (the majority of them anyway) consider it their group. They (for the most part are unable to comprehend that there is a world outside of their borders, that is able to exist without their intervention or control. {;^)
You had insufficient information to reach that conclusion :-) which is incorrect! Keith Make friends in the hobby. Visit Garratt photos for the big steam lovers.
