WP colour question

Was the roof walk on the silver/orange Western Pacific boxcars painted silver (aluminum) too?

Thanks.

Wolf Kirchmeir,

Regrading your question, I check two of my reference books on WP freight cars: 'WP Locomotives & Cars' by P. Dorin and 'WP Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment' by J. Eager.

There are two types of 'silver/orange' boxcars. One has orange sides with a silver feather and the other has silver sides with an orange feather. Both their roofs and ends are black. The pictures do not show the roof walks very well, but they appear to be black also.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Yes, it is, thanks. The IHC 50' plug-door car I have is silver all over w/ a black roof walk, obviously incorrect assuming your book shows all the paint jobs. The body molding is pretty good on these cars, the scheme is the right era ("approximately 1960"), so I've switched trucks, wheels, and couplers. Correcting the paintjob as you indicate, and some weathering will make this a good looking car. 'Course I don't know if the car type is strictly correct, but it looks OK to me. :-)

Thanks again.

Wolf Kirchmeir,

I'm glad I was some help to you.

It's quite obvious that IHC boxcar is not prototypical for WP. As far as I can tell, WP silver boxcars with black roof & ends were 40' only and didn't have plug-doors.

But hey, it's your railroad. I even have a few cars that might not be prototypical for WP in my inventory, but I like them just the same.

If you need further info, just post a message.
