Regarding the Turner engine, a collegue of mine who helps out at the Kew Bridge pumping museum had a Turner for sale a few months back.

I can always put anyone interested in touch.

Not that it makes much difference but the last time I took a caravan to the IoW (that's before some b*****r nicked it!) it cost about £65 if you go over after 6:00 pm. Slightly more palatable I guess.

But that doesn't include a trailer?? I think Rolands figures are the current price with a trailer, but I also note that there are off-peak reductions.

People are not generally too keen to have an engine collected around 8pm and I wanted to come back too :-) ttfn Roland

He said he took a caravan - isn't this a trailer??

I know, I was just expanding the discussion a bit.

Fine.

Which of the single piston per cylinder two strokes had piston controlled ports? I still wonder what the advantages of two pistons in a cylinder were?

I suppose the extra complexity and the fact that valved direct injection engines were made in greater numbers just brought down the price?

AJH

I may well be missing the point but I would have thought the majority had piston controlled ports apart from the uniflows? By no means all however relied on simple crankcase scavenging. Am I right in thinking that by two pistons you mean things like the Junkers and the licence built French CLM? If so then I think the advantage would be greater port area without having to make the timing as extreme to get the area. Thus higher efficiency. Open to correction. regards Roland

With opposed piston engines, by giving one crank lead over the other port timing can be so that the exhaust ports are uncovered prior to the intake ports. Assists scavenging and the early closing can allow a percentage of additional charge in the cylinder.
