Murphy's, the utilities contractors used to have depot near here. All the diesel vans were parked up overnight in a compound and two fitters used to go out every morning to start the fleet up.

They had an old scrapper petrol transit for yard use. It contained about 2 tons of fork lift batteries and a set of jump leads off a jumbo jet or so it looked like. Their job was to go in early and go round the yard getting these York pigs started. Occasionally they would get one that would flatten even these batteries.

The 6 cylinder they fitted to the A series was even worse than the four. If you ever drove an A series you will know what a pig they were. Like a Ford K series crossed with a Morris 1000 but someone was a bit late throwing the bucket of water over the pair.

That's posh !

One of ours had a can of Easy Start wired permanentlyunder the bonnet(!), with a short tube from it and a pull-wire leading from a knob in the cab.

The "good" one just had the methanol hot-start plug from one of the Bedfords drilled into the manifold. Although these plugs were always a bit of a short lifetime device, they were _vastly_ more reliable than Ford's pre-heater plugs. I don't think I ever saw one of these Yorks with a working OEM pre-heater plug.

Only drove an A series once. "This is nice I said". 'Should be too', said the owner, 'Amount of money I spent on putting that Perkins engine in it'

Did you ever have a York shed its fragile drive gear to the external oil pump?

One NA 6cyl in use here to power the barge, 120hp is a bit OTT but I do enjoy having the power, means the boat will stop in its own length from cruising speed! A very similar engine is still produced and spares are still available from several sources.
