Lister Blackstone ES6M wiring??

Had a challenging evening & early morning (4 hours in bed :-( ), after being called out to help get a recalcitrant Lister Blackstone ES6M (400 bhp) started, the vessel being booked on dry-dock (a 'real' one, not mine ) for 8am today. It's electric start only, with twin CAV S7 starters. The problem is with the fiendish electrical interlocks, warnings etc, which aren't performing as they should. Pressing the 'start' button actually starts an electric lub oil priming pump, & the starters are brought in when the oil pressure reaches a set level. etc, etc.... In theory.... Then there's a long-standing problem over the starters not switching off when they should..... Trying to work all this out, without the aid of a circuit diagram, and with the only source of lighting coming from a Foden FD6 screaming away at 1800 rpm 6 feet away, isn't easy!! The electrical controls seem to be Lister/Blackstone rather than part of than the shipbuilders' work, so I mention it here just in case someone has the relevant diagrams tucked in a cupboard somewhere. I suppose Alsthom or whoever it is now might have something somewhere (from 1969), but I wouldn't bet on them finding it after umpteen reorganisations. Also, anyone got a CAV S7 starter, 24Volt, clock rotation, in use as a doorstop? We *did* get it to the dry-dock, BTW ;-)

Cheers Tim

Hi Tim, I have the full Blackstone marine manual for the E range but it seems to describe only air starting. Mention is made of electric starting but no real info. Manual is 200 pages long so it would take a few hours to copy, if it is of use let me know.

Cheers Paul

Thanks Paul. Good to know you have it, but probably no immediate help

- the current problems are entirely electrical.

I'm pleased to report that MAN B&W Diesel Ltd, Mirrlees Blackstone (The *human* answering the phone has to say all that ) in Stamford, for it is now they, have been very helpful, there's someone there who can roughly remember how these things work and, once I had furnished them with the drawing number, he was able to find it & fax me a copy within twenty minutes. G E Middleton in Manchester have also been very helpful (as they usually are!) in rebuilding a fried starter motor very promptly. Reasonable though their charges are, I'm glad it's not mine when it comes to the bill!

Off back to the vessel in the morning to try to make it all go properly.
