I can only repeat whats etched in the instruction plate on the engine.

Kim, here in the states at least, the two stroke outboard motors have been

50:1 for a long time now. I believe that some manufacturers tried 100:1 and the lubrication was adequate but corrosion became a factor at that mixture. I would think that you're 50:1 mixture would be just fine as, was stated earlier, it is a matter of better oils rather than better metallurgy.

- & that's 16:1, innit? But - it's a Tarpen, not a Maytag ;o)) I suppose it's all to do with bearing areas, piston speed & loading. I recall that the big two stroke T500 Suzuki - which had pumped & metered lubrication to the big ends, the cylinder wall and the main bearings - worked out at something like 120:1 & they'd last forever.

I've known petroil two strokes that demanded anything from 16:1 to 50:1 & I'd love to know who - and what - decides the ratio.

Maybe it to do with the better the engine the more oil required to keep it in good order :-))
