Sounds like it is oiling up. Probably too rich.

Howabout trying to help the poor chap gents! Its overfueling or underairing so my guess would be a dirty/sticky injector or just possibly a totally clogged air filter. Try removing the latter and if its no better get the injector checked out. Most places have an injection servicer nearby and a typical charge seems to be about 20-25 quid. That's my ignorant 2p What say the experts? regards

There are a lot of faults that would give the symptoms described, a blocked air filter is a possibility, but I would suggest a look at the injection department, and the injector itself is the most likely culprit.

Assuming it is not the Series 1 engine (Horizontal injector) then other things to look for include stuck piston rings (change oil; to a good detergent and run it for a while) or the delivery valve on the injection pump needs reseating/renewalor the governor linkage is stuck, but that wouldn't relate to the hard starting.
