Projects for winter

Gentlemen,

Now the rally season is all but finished, I have a couple of one day events left, lets see a list of projects from us all that we can seriously get into over winter with maybe a few pictures in the usual place of befores and afters as we go along. Maybe if we asked our resident Webmaster to create a Website specifically for us all so that via him he could maybe post the pics and words too, any chance Mr Forbes. If there are common projects being undertaken, not necessarily the same engine but a referb for instance of a similar part or how you overcome a machining exercise for instance. Ideas on a post card, lets here your thoughts on the subject.

We can use

for this if it is a thing that folks want to do, we are still organising other things for it so it's not in use currently.

I'll have to think on how we can get stuff across, probably easier for people to send it to me so I can put it on for them, we have ADSL so no problem with images and downloading/uploading.

This sounds like a good idea! It will add an impetus to our efforts perhaps, knowing that others are interested in seeing a renovation moving towards completion.

I'm up for it and would be happy to contribute pics etc.

OK, I've set up a facility for up to 12 pictures initially per person, and a set of pages to take the picture plus as much text as you want to use. No problem to add pictures and pages later, the format will be the same as our Portland04 menu pages and picture pages.

I'll get the set of blank pages zipped up, let me know who wants to play...

Excellent idea!

Count me in.

I have an 'unknown' engine to rebuild and get running as well as a half scale Hercules Economy I'm building and a Ruston PB to restore as a minimum. There's about a thousand other projects, but these three are flavour of the month.

I was looking for some web-space for the unknown engine so that I might elicit some of the joint wisdom of the group.

Now I can get in the workshop I'm hoping to get a few bits done this winter, Crossley TSH, and a brace of National 5V's appear to be first in the queue for new trolleys and general fettling. A webpage to chart progress would be good, thanks Peter!

Hear, hear, it is an excellent idea, but the thought of all the projects I've got and my snail's pace progress is bad enough without the rest of you knowing about it!

Perhaps I could show a picture of all our haylage and hay as the 'before' and the empty loft and cleared haylage as the 'after' picture with some new lambs gambolling around in the Spring sunshine.

I'm sure I can come up with something enginey though. I've got another project arriving very soon....

Dudes and Dudettes

my project is to totally renovate a PETTER A, the early type where the magneto connects on the same side as the starting handle, anyone whos obcessed with this particular type will u know what i mean, pictures of this type of engine and all the other PETTER A and W ranges on,

Should be fun. the orignal paint work is in excellent condition including the castings, inside they are painted in a yellow dye, amazed it still survived to b honest.

anyway pictures can b made avaliable, Martyn

Still on the look out for ANY PETTER A range and W range Engines, Parts, or anythign related to them,

PS sorry i dunno why i really like these engines, ok there not as easy to work on as listers ie, the carb gets in the way when trying to put the magneto on. but i still think there very good, ive found they wont run slower than about 300revs as this oils the engine up, anyone had any other ideas?, PS this engine is only a 1.5hp model @ 650rpm,

We have a small box of bits, including a new cylinder head IIRC, I'll gig it out in the week and see what is there. I know there is a timing cover, 2 heads and some other stuff, but don't know which engine series.

is Martin being a little exclusive here? Are there any women who follow this hobby, or is it one of the last bastions of male superiority? :-)

No, as far as we know, this is an exclusively male News Group. Not that we feel in any way "exclusive" or wish to exclude any one on grounds of ethnicity, age or gender, it's just happened that way, nothing else. ;o))

Unless someone knows otherwise, of course ...............

It's a good time to buy one, especially if you look around ebay etc.

I have a soft spot for the Sony Mavicas, but there are loads of very good machines out there now, very difficult to find a bad one.

is probably the best of the camera review sites that I and others have come across.

Gentlemen, and it is just to the gentlemen I address this post. Don't forget we have plenty of people who read but don't post.

I know one of them to be a woman, and she is someone who has handled more engines than some of us. I, for one, hope there are more.

Thanks for anyone whos noticed my scrounge and like i mentioned futher up, all is greatfully recieved,

Im honestly and truely interested in anything what so ever related to them, Illistrations and Instructions manuals, I think i got a bug or summit, only problem is it wont go away, as im only 18 and living with my parents still my dad regrets first digging out his Lister D, Which we restored, then decided to buy another Lister Engine this time a B, and i came across my first Petter A1 on a local farm which made its way back to my house, I started to restore it and discovered i needed another magneto as the aluminum bracket was cracked and fell apart as i took it off, whilst looking for my magneto i came across another A an earlier version, which i quickly snapped up and is now also in my garage the one i plan to do this winter, only problem is it needs an inlet Valve which im beggin anyone to find one for me, im considering buying another engine like i have with several other petter A's, not yet got a W type though and would really like one, jus never seen one up for grabs, A few years later as in now and its begun to get embrassin how many Petter A types i have and how many bits of Petter A Types i acturally have. as well as our original Listers,

Thanks Martyn

anyway point in this was just to thank anyone whos trying to help me get this engine running again, If i can help anyone else please let me know, i have several parts of Series A Magneto's as these are the most commonly found on Petter A's and a limited amount of the WIPAC version which was used but not as often,

for me, im considering

Martyn,

I don't know how prevalent Petter A valves are but if you're stuck and you have a pattern I'd be happy to make one for you - for perhaps a contribution towards the material cost.

To the guru's out there: I assume a medium hardened silver steel would do the job? I've made them from stainless (which is not a problem but probably not ideal), I've also made them from EN16T (which was a pain in the nether regions - but that's what the bl***y stupid drawing called for - never again!).

I agree, it would be nice to think so but the only women I know (especially SWMBO) consider collections of rusty iron, grease up to the elbows, copies of SEM at every available sitting location and the ability to be fascinated by the running of said piece of rusty iron on Sunday mornings (at the expense of the neighbours otherwise peaceful breakfast) is only tollerable whilst I continue to pay the mortgage but generally is very sad indeed - not to say down-right aggravating! I told her I was going to run off and marry the lady from the 'Salvage Squad' who seems to have a genuine understanding, but all she did was laugh!
