Advice on Paint

Thought would try Railmatch LMS Crimson Lake instead of own mix from Humbrol. However it is gloss and much darker than I like, does matt varnish tone it down ? Any suggestions as to what colour to add to lighten it a little (or even a medium amount)?

Adding matt varnish over gloss paint will _sort of_ work, but you'd be better to buy semi-gloss if that's what you want to end up with. Adding extra layers just gunges the sharp detailing.

If you want to tone down any colour just add white - a very small amount at a time! Straw/yellow will brighten while lightening, yellow/orange will lighten while brightening and accentuating the red end. White plus black in equal quantities will dull the colour. etc.

You might have seen an artist's colour wheel: ........purple red, ........ blue orange,...... green. .......yellow, (hope that looks right on your screen)

Red, blue, yellow are the primary colours and purple, green and orange are the intermediates. The three above the middle darken, the three below lighten. (assuming you're modifying a medium shade) White or black lighten or darken the tone.

Gave it a try with small amount in seperate tin. Added about 5 per cent Humbrol matt white and 15-20 per cent thinner (was a bit thick). Has lightened it slightly, could have done bit more though. Interestingly it has removed a lot of the gloss look - that I do like, else would have to dump full tin. Wasnt too worried about losing detail as there isnt a lot on an old whitemetal Flatiron :-) However, when do a compound - no, not too much detail on that either :-) However the old brass Patriot, now that has some excellent detail, so this method will be perfect ! Thanks for advice,

ps anyone any idea what make the Patriot kit is. At least 95% inc tender is brass. Detail bits top class (also brass). Tender rivets look wow.
