Cleaning wheels

What's the best way to clean the wheels of old locos? The wheels are a brassy coloured material (not silver like modern ones).

I used a track rubber which certainly improved running but they become oxidised again within a couple of days

One option, get a moderate quality handkerchief of some similar non fluffly cloth, put some meths on it and lay it on the track, wind up the power and rest the loco partly on the track and partly on the cloth, holding the loco so it cannot move but the wheels go round on the cloth. Reverse ends and do it again to clean the other end. This works well with my N Gauge locos, I got the idea from a US website the name/address of which I cannot recal

I use the Peco wheel cleaner on an old 12V controller
