Great suggestion! The rails need to be clean (no greasy finger marks, clean first with alcohol or acetone, I guess) but the result is way beyond expectations. On nickel silver rails it produces a dull dark brownish finish and no significant electrical resistance problems. In fact, if one leaves the rail heads clear, it looks like a good medium for generic rail-weathering, it seems to produce a more consistent result than paint.
