help please fitting Lenz decoder to Hornby Fowler 4P

Have just purchased the Hornby Fowler 4P tank loco and am trying to fit a Lenz 1025E decoder. There does not appear to be any room to physically locate the chip end of the decoder.

Has anyone fitted a decoder to this loco and thus have any suggestions as to where to fit it please? - careful ......

Have also just purchased the Hornby Black5 and successfully fitted a similar decoder - it all works a treat. Magnificent model. Chris TROON

I've not fitted a decoder to one of the new Fowler tanks, but I did fit a significant amount of lead sheet ballast where the water tanks would be. Can't see that a decoder would be a problem similarly positioned.

Chris, don't forget the little Lenz dercoder - tiny thing it is, with back EMF etc etc. Don't remember the number - it'll be on the Lenz site - but I have one in a Bacj, amm On30 Davenport and it is a good performer. Will fit anywhere, seen one fitted between the sides of a HO loco frame.

You mean the ½amp

LE0511 (no back-EMF) or LE0521 (with back-EMF)

the first of which I am now running successfully in my Bachmann 08 shunters. Excellent little decoders.

Thanks for the input guys. I now have the (1025E) decoder fitted.

I didn't think there was room where the water tanks would be, but after your response John I went back and measured. Decided there would be 2mm clearance when the coupling rod was at the top of the wheels. So I gave it a go and there is just sufficient clearance.

Checked with Stan at MacKay Models and he also fits the decoder in this position. So it is now assembled and earning its keep on my branch line

- thanks John and Stan.

Incidentally pin 1 (orange wire) is at the front of the Fowler 4P compared to the back of the loco on the Black Five. If Hornby aren't going to mark the pin number on the socket surely they should be consistent? Still just reversed the plug and it now travels in the 'right' direction.

Will keep a note of the small decoders as they will probably be required for the Bachmann Jinty? Thanks

Chris
