Apparently the July 1965 (VOL6-No.11) Airfix magazine contains an article on motorising the City of Truro and I was wondering/hoping someone out there may have that copy and could scan and email it to me.....alternatively someone may have done the conversion and could email em about that.
many thanks
Steve

OR Railway Modeller Apparently (if that's what RM1981 means)

In 1965 the most likely mechanisim would be an off-the-shelf K's mechanisim. This had a barely adequate open frame motor (like an Airfix MW005) with a worm at each end driving two axles with with worm gears held in a white metal block. The whitemetal block had various slots for three axles at a variety of spacings.
You really don't want to do that! Perhaps you can buy a battered proprietry loco like a Deans Goods with tender drive and adapt it to a Dapol CofT GWR tender. I would suggest you replace the plastic wheels of the loco with Romford wheels and use the loco for current collection in addition to the tender drive mechanisim.

Suggest talking to Branchlines of Exeter (mailorder, telephone and email, no website). They offer a kit for mechanising the Airfix body and also a super-detailing kit.

You don't have to go back that far. Model Rail did a masterclass on the subject a few years ago. Sold my copy to a bloke in Truro, took a week to get there.
