Welcome to the group... (don't worry, we're usually a friendly lot, despite the little "handbags at dawn" in this thread).

I must admit I'm a bit puzzled about the idea of a model railway simulator. A "real" model railway is a simulation of the real thing, with limitations and shortcomings which we accept as coming with the territory. Likewise, modelling anything on a PC introduces shortcomings of a different type. It therefore seems odd to me to produce a computer model of a "real" model and combine the shortcomings of both systems.

I've never used Trainz, but I hear good things about it and you can pick up a copy on ebay or elsewhere for about a fiver (from memory). Why not give that a go?

Alternatively, the folks on here would be able to help you with ideas for a very compact "real" layout, which might be more rewarding than a simulator if you have any talent which could be applied to modelling.

The GSP program is quite good and sounds like it might be what you want. However, it is German and most of the stock, scenery etc is of German origin. There are other items that can be downloaded but they too are mostly German. It can be a bit fiddly especially if you want tracks at different heights but there are a lerge number of features and the example layouts that come with it are useful to see what can be achieved. The main thing is that it's cheap of you shop around.

Have you tried Trainz? I bought a copy about 3 years ago. I think it's great. It comes loaded with content and layouts, plus you can fairly easily create your own layout from scratch. It comes with all kinds of locos, rolling stock, track, scenery bits, structure, the ability to create mountains and valleys and water easily, many different gauges, etc., etc., etc,. You can also download literally tens of thousands of other content created by trainz enthusiasts for all over the world, which they upload so that anyone can download whatever they want, for free. I think it's a great virtual model train software package.

I have gotten back into trains recently. I've been working on an 1830s 30" X 60'' tiny HO layout for 5 months and maybe I'll have it presentable by the end of 2007. If you don't have the time, or space, or money, trainz is a great subsitute. If you do have those things, trainz is still great, IMO.

I bought Trainz Ultimate Collection and find it completely baffling.

I have a reasonably well-specified PC that meets its requirements, with the possible exception of the graphics card, but I've still never got anywhere with it.

It seems to be a budget version that is sidelined by other versions.

Am I missing something? Is it really any good or should I bin it now and cut my losses?

Trainz is quite demanding of computing power,particularly graphics.If it seems to be running slowly/sluggishly them your graphics card is probably the problem. I'd advize visiting the Trainz forum at the Auran website.
