Sounds like the old Hornby Ones, as for reliability they are not as good as either the newer Hornby or Peco - the latter by a long shot ... however being a skinflint rather than buy new I've got around half a dozen or so still working on my (my son's!) layout and ... well ... what the hey, they work. Got to say though that I haven't got them on any particularly critical sections of track.
