RHD 15" railway.

I was watching the "Railway World" DVD of the Rhomney, Hyde Domchurch etc railway. I noticed that the bogie coaches wheels gave a tick tick Clack.. tick tick Clack .. as the train passed. Three beats, the first two quieter and then a loader one. Are the rail ends staggered? Did the adjacent coach have a single axled bogie at one end??? ?

Just wondering what I missed?

The ill-fated United Aircraft/CN Turbotrain of the early 1970s had a single axle, rather than 2 bogies, at each articulation. It also had a tilting mechanism. With its gas turbine engines (one each end), it was very quiet both approaching and passing.

Traditionally, the RHDR used staggered rail-joints.

I'm not so sure if they still do so when relaying track. DC

H David, staggered joints would explain the three beat sound, especially if the staggering was close to each bogies wheelbase.

Thanks, Greg.P.
