SuperNEO magnets

Hi folks,

Got an old Triang Western Pullman that I have upgraded the motor magnet to a super NEO one and it runs like a DOG!

Runs really badly and low revs and really judders and labours at high speeds.

Take the NEO magnet out and put back the old magnet and it goes like stink at high speed but the slow running is appalling.

Any ideas, my immediate observations are that the superNEO magnet is effectively pulling the armature upwards into the pole pieces and causing the bearings and gears to bind.

Hardly an upgrade :-)

Get the original motor refurbished? East Kent Models should be able to help with that. ISTR there was a 5-pole armature upgrade available at one time. That motor bogie might be very basic, but it can be capable of quite good performance.

Changing magnets doesn't work for a very simple reason: the windings on the armature are calculated in terms of the magnetic field saturation provided by the magnet. Changing the magnet will change the motor's response to the current supplied, which is not the same as an improvement from your point of vies -- as you have discovered.

Get a new or refurbished Triang motor, or a completely different motor (which will also entail changing the gears.)

You can improve the model's performance somewhat by a thorough cleaning and lubrication, not just of the motor, but of the complete power train. Use light oils, not heavy greases - the model plane fraternity have an excellent range of "sticky" lubricants, which work very well in model railways. Avoid common household oils, they are simply not good enough. Use a _conductive_ lubricant (eg, Aerocar's Conducta-lube) on the commutator, which will reduce both contact resistance and friction. That will definitely improve low-speed performance, as it will allow the motor to draw sufficient current at a lower voltage, hence reducing the speed. But it's toss up whether this will be enough improvement to please you. Sorry 'bout that. :-)

Good luck!
