Wrong colour 45xx??

I am now the "Chuffed" owner of three x bachmann 45xx locos, these being the BR black, lined green and collectors club sloping tank versions. Trouble is, while looking through "Great western branch Lines 1- The south West" by Michael S. Welch, on page 71, it shows 4566 as a black (looks unlined) loco taken on 11th June 1961 while Bachmann have produced it as a green lined version with late crest.

So, is there any sort of archive / records of when locos went into works for overhauls etc and when they world have changed colours?

Although I don't know the history of this particular loco, I would imagine that it probably got repainted sometime during it's BR life into Late Logo Lined Green. However, as 4566 is also a preserved example, it may be that Bachmann have represented in a livery it had while in preservation, rather than in actual operating life.

Thanks Ian, That would put in a simular class to the std 4mt. I baught a green one, it looks superb in this livery. Trouble is I could not get my head around the fact they never ran in Green during BR days, so I sold it and baught a dirty black one!

Although I am not a rivet counter or model a particular period or area in br Days, my range covers 55-62+ with a mixture of late and early BR emblems from all for regions and even the odd green disiesel when the mood takes me, having found this colour photo of 4566 I think I will know re-number it into one of the green ones I have photos of,

thanks once again.

Hi, I'm not a GW fan but I did notice a picture of 4566 in Colin Boocock's book, British Railways In Colour 1948-1968 on page 61. Taken at St.Ives in March

1960, on first appearance it looks black. But the lining visible at the bottom of the side tanks gives it away. It is clearly orange and black (it would be red, straw and grey if the main livery was black) and on closer inspection there is a slight greeny tinge. I would suggest that your picture of a black 4566 in 1961 is actually an oily blackened green 4566 a year on.

The Bachmann models look quite convincing - I'm tempted to get one just for display as it would be out of place on an ex GN line in Notts in the 1950s!!

lol, I am into my weathering but this would just be a matt black all over job! Thanks for your reply, I will try looking at the photos I have again although I have asked Bachmann as to what source of information they drew on with regards to colour. and here's me thinking Western engines were cleaner than the rest??

IIRC there's a shot or two of 4566 in Peter Gray's 'steam on west country branch lines' which show it in lined green circa 1960
