Whats the curved pice of metal for over the coal box? Beowulf

Isn't it behind the bunker?

It was put there to increase coal capacity and to protect the head code lamp when one is on the top lamp bracket.

As when the loco is pulling a local passenger train and the lamp code is one light in the top position.

Hate to disillusion you sir, but I think you'll find it is injection molded plastic, as is the coal.
