decipher argon cylinder stampings

Hi, I bought an argon tank a few years ago and damned if I remember what the size is. When I called my supplier and other local welding stores I got vastly different estimates as to what its capacity is, anywhere from 80 to 160.

It's exactly 7" in diameter, 48" high from bottom to base of valve,

52.25 high w/cap. Painted green.

Here are the tank stampings:

Valve markings: Sherwood 136 TV 30 02W CGA 560

Any help appreciated.

That should hold 125 cubic feet. (DOT 3AA2265 is a standard American size) (TC-3AAM-174, is the North American international standard)

I think "IT......" is a serial/model number.

The 07 - 02 is likely the original inspection date

The "+" means the cylinder is acceptable to be over pressurized by

10% (effectively increasing the volume by 10%)

Sherwood is the valve brand, CGA 580 is the thread type for Argon (also used for other inert gases), I can't find anything about CGA 560, is this a typo?

It's probably as you said "CGA 580". You know how wonderfully legible those stamped marks are.

and a DOT 3AA2265 cylinder is a DOT type 3AA cylinder (spun steel high pressure) which may be filled to 2265 psi (or 10% over, 2491 psi, as there's

  • after the latest hydro test date).

One also sees DOT 3AL (aluminum, not steel, and generally smaller sizes), DOT 4B (welded steel propane, refrigerant, etc. cyl's) such as 4B240 and

4B480, and others I can not recall..., also "NRC" (N>> That should hold 125 cubic feet. (DOT 3AA2265 is a standard American
