High Res Weld Videos

Over the last many years of welding instruction I have been constantly searching for better video of an actual weld. There are millions of crappy videos showing the welder and a bright white area where the weld is occurring.

Finally I found what I was looking for.

These guys are researching Weld Vision systems at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Weld Vision systems are used with robotic welding systems to allow a human operator to see what the robot is doing. The cameras are very expensive, so I have never been able to get ahold of one. All of my attempts to take video of welds failed to show any detail of the actual weld process.

Some of these videos are quite detailed and beautiful. I especially like the laser welding build-up video.

Enjoy.

It's like that in real life. Whether you get good vision with a gold lens, an autodark, or a cheap hood, seeing the puddle and what it's doing well enough is one of the biggest keys to good welding. After that, it's easy. Well kinda. Sorta. Well, not really. Never mind.

I notice in these passes, some are dragged and some are pushed. A lot of right angle angle of attack, with small lateral angles.

I also notice that one can plainly see the melting of "boogers" laying on the surface from the previous pass, but being melted and incorporated into the molten pool, turned to liquid the same temperatures and properties as the parent (or base) metal.

Very informative. Thanks. I was wanting to do this, but just didn't want to fry $1,000 worth of equipment in case it didn't work right.
