On the regulator end of the hoses, about a foot down, is a metal band holding the hoses together.
I'd like my hoses to be seperate for about 6" more. Can that metal band be moved, or must I reposition my tanks? - Mike

Move them as far down as you like, it hurts nothing. It is there to keep the hoses from separating.

Just give them a slight squeeze to loosen them and while hanging onto the band, pull the hose until you have it where you want it. Then take something flat and push the band back together slightly.
