ASP 1.08 help needed

Mar 04, 2004 2 Replies

I recently acquired an ASP 1.08 Red Head, but no manual. The engine has the ASP carb. The engine appears never to have been run.

The low speed needle needle valve (idle) has been turned all the way in. What should this be set to for an initial setting (how many turns out) ?

I know I need to get some head shims, make sure I have GOOD muffler pressure and, according to the forum on RC Universe, run a 13x6 or 14x6 prop. Any other idiosyncracies/problems and/or solutions I should be aware of with this engine ?

Thanks

Ted, I have this ASP engine and it runs great without shims, as long as FAI (no nitro) or 5% nitro fuel is used.

The procedure for adjusting the idle is as follows from the ASP instruction sheet.

Set the idle stop screw so the opening in the throttle barrel is the width of a pin at fully closed. Open the high speed needle 1 1/2 turns. With a piece of fuel tubing connected to the nipple, blow into the tubing while opening the idle needle until air just flows. Then open the needle an additional 1/2 turn.

A 14X6 prop may be OK depending on the model you're installing the 1.08 in. Running 5% nitro fuel and no shims, I use a 15X6 prop on a Goldberg Ultimate bipe with good results. I've had the best results with a K&B 1L plug.

Happy Flying, Mike
