Engine Selection

New to the sport. Flying a 40 trainer with an OS .46LA engine. Having the same trouble as described in an earlier post (Tiny Bubbles). Engine runs for a minute or two of flight and then just quits. Have tried a number fixes suggested by locals at the flying field - no help. Will try some of the approaches as outlined on this board. However, I'm almost convinced that I'll be replacing the engine and the fuel tank assemblies.

I think I know the difference between an LA and an FX engine. What I'd like to know is what a BB engine is. Would someone tell me this? I found a Tower .46 BB in the AMA magazine ad. Also found a MECOA .46 with a $20 trade in offer that is interesting.

Any guidance greatly appreciated. Jerry

BB stand for Ball Bearing

the OS .46 is not a ball bearing it is a sleeve engine. The OS .46FX is a BB engine.

Do yourself a favor and get a Thunder Tiger Pro .46. Double ball bearing engine. Can't bet 'em!

BB standa for Ball Bearing supported crankshaft. The LA series uses a bronze sleeve bearing for the crankshaft.

The Tower engine is known as a mixed bag. Some run great and others are a pain. I have one of the MECOA engines and it runs just fine. The original carb was defective and Randy replaced it quickly with no questions.

Another one to look at is the GMS .40-47. You can get tmen from several sources bt MECOA has the best price. These are very strong, reliable enginer.

Have you replaced the fuel lines? a small pinhole can cause you a world of hurt!

AS long as you have eliminated problems such as possible fuel foaming, any of those engines(OS FX, Mecoa) would be a big step up in power. I would add serveral more to your list: Thunder Tiger Pro 46, GMS 47, and I have been impressed with the new Evolution 46 by Horizon.

Have you actually run one yet? Their ads say they are as powerful or more powerful than other (un-named, of course) sport engines but give no details as to how they arrived at that conclusion.

For the 2nd time now I've pulled the tank, replaced all the tubes, tested it under water, installed a new needle valve assembly and tube to the carb. This time I also removed the bulkheads in the plane that the tank was wedged into, wrapped the tank in foam rubber and slid it back in and installed a new prop. I'll fly it tomorrow and see what happens. I've ordered the MECOA 46 since the $20 trade-in pays for 2nd day air freight. I need the added power because the plane barely gets off the ground (grass strip) with increased drag and all the added weight from epoxy in multiple patches and rebuilds aquired during the learning process. I'm sure you have all been there. :-) I sure appreciate the inputs. Jerry

On 7/27/2003 5:57 PM Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these great (and sometimes not so great) words of knowledge:

Odds are the problem (based on your prior posts) is either a bad fuel line between the needle valve and the carb OR a leaking "O" ring on the needle valve. One additional possibility is a leaking backplate (easily sealed with a little silicone).

BB stands for Ball Bearing.

The LA series engines are bronze bushed engines, the FX engines are Ball Bearing.

The Tower engines are quite powerful for a 46. The problem I have had with them is that they WILL NOT shut down with the transmitter (OS #8 works best in them).

I have no experience with the GMS engines - they are SUPPOSED to be a decent engine.

IMHO, the best buy, for the money is the TT Pro 46. It takes a little longer to break in the the OS 46 FX, but it is a strong, USER FRIENDLY engine.

I second the backplate suggestion. Our club has had 2 LAs with this problem. The original backplates were plastic and eventually warped. Trip to local hobby shop found that there was a metal replacement backplate for the LA. This fixed curred the problem.
