It's happened to me a couple of times. Once, I was dumb enough to take off a Telemaster 40 when a thunderstorm approached. About 10 seconds into the flight, the winds increased from about 5 mph to about 30. Talk about being blown around like a leaf! I did manage to land the plane backwards and get it stashed under my truck just before the downpour started. The second time I was flying a GP Easy Sport on a relatively breezy day. I came in and the wind picked up enough to start the legs of my pants flapping. The Easy Sport stopped in midair about three feet off the runway and made a slow vertical descent to the runway. Neat!

Until now diesels were too heavy for most aircraft applications, because of the strength needed to deal with the high pressures involved, but new alloys make it possible. The Germans had a few diesels flying in WWII but they weren't very successful. Diesels also rely on the heat of compression for ignition, and at high altitudes there is too little latent heat in the air for it. Turbocharging or supercharging fixed that.
