for what purpose is coroplast sold? what are brand names for it? (or if it is a brand name, what is the generic description?)

Corrugated plastic
Coroplast is used for signs and store displays here in U.S. It's like corrugated cardboard used in boxes. It's plastic and looking on the edge the channels are square. The most common sizes are 2 mm and 6mm thick. It's very stiff in one direction and bends in the other. It comes in 4 ft. X 8 ft. sheets. Here we can buy smaller pieces from the local sign shops. It comes in many different colors too. I would think it would be available on your side of the pond.

Coroplast is a brand name, the material is very commonly used for temporary signs - like political campaign signs. If you've been on the spadtothebone site, you know it's basically two layers of plastic with parallel flutes of the same material separating them. I would ask around your local sign shop.
You didn't look far enough on the Spadtothe bone website. On the home page, click on resources. Then on the next page, click on resources in the Tips & Tricks box in the upper left-hand corner. Then click on materials and finally coroplast. This page will tell you more than you ever need to know about the stuff.
Finally, I'm sure in Europe they use the same stuff (with perhaps a different name)considering that the SPAD phenomenon is universal. I have seen posts from all over the world regarding its use in SPADs. In fact, there is an outfit in Australia that build ARF SPADs.
