Where to live - UK - 2

Thanks for all your `helpful' :-) suggestions.

But as for Australia and NZ - great but I'm not sure I want to be that far from civiilisation ! (Only joking - my best friend from schooldays lives in Auckland)

Others have commented on house prices which are just plain silly within 50-80 miles of London. For example, £400,000 near London - ie 50-80 miles - just buys a small four bedroom detached house on a small plot these days ...... but wifey's definition of civilisation is access to a Waitrose supermarket so that is going to limit the choice ! (not !)

But us wrinklies - I'm 56 (and a modeller on and off since age 8)

- need to eke out our pensions and we need decent health care and Zimmer frame shops etc !

I used to travel to California in the early 70's - was that the golden age for a golden state ? How I envied that lifestyle back then and my Pontiac Le Mans 350 cu inches worth.

So this summer I guess we will be cruising West Hampshire, Somerset and Devon. Cornwall is just too far from the rest of the Family.

What about Gloucs and Shropshire ?

Out here (east anglia) 400 grand will net you a four bedroom house and an acre not ten miles from Wairoses of various flavors.

Go for it. There is a place by the river in Exford that sells the best cream teas EVER. Don't miss out on the moors...

I like em. Gloucs is a bit expensive, but anywhere west of Oxford is pretty much a different country.

Hi Colin,

Yep. The wife and I went through a similar process to yourself. We wanted to find a queiter spot than Newbury (Berks) and so started looking south of Bristol but found that it gets very crowded in the summer as all the holiday makers flock south. Not really what we wanted.

We then started to look north of Bristol and finally settled in a little village near Tewkesbury (Glos). Nice countryside, views of the Cotswold and Malvern hills, low rainfall, good flying sites and most people in the rat race just pass by on the M5 and leave us to enjoy the peace and queit. Only problem is that most model supplies have to be by mail order which is OKprovided you know exactly what you want buy!

Come to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.

50 miles or 35 minutes from London or Birmingham Two fully stocked model shops! (One is AlsHobbies of Ali Maschinchy in the UK) Three flying clubs! (Ours IS the best...of course) Loads of space!!!!! Loads of choice in Houses i.e 4 Bed +++ from 130 K up to 300K A little bit of all kinds of weather but not a lot of either!. Ivinghoe beacon in the Chiltern hills 15 minutes away for 'all direction' slope soaring! 3 Tesco's 1 Safeway's 1 Waitrose all 24 hour opening! All of Oxford Street, London stores under one roof in a single level shopping mall!

Any more...... or shall I book you some tickets???

I've been to Milton Keynes, it's a great place...but...I wouldn't want to live there Don't write off provincial NZ (or even Aus) it's cheap housing, good climate, great people, moe money for modeling etc. Forget Auckland or Sydney, go for the provinces and you can't go wrong :-)

Well... Aus and NZ sound a blast but im not able to walk that far and I dont like kilometers. What did you miss in MK. Theres absolutely something for all tastes. Old

15th century houses or 21st century and everything in between. Often the nicer parts are missed on a breif visit. Sure theres some iffy parts but there all around the UK. I like the idea that I. only 2.5 hours from almost every part of the coast, be it south, east or west. Hey man you can go Skiing here 365 days a year on REAL snow. The only place in the UK that you can. 'Course they wont let you fly your models off it though.

Nothing the matter with MK, it's just the fact that 60,000,000. people live close by, only 4 mil here (-:
