Stupid Fonts

VERY annoying problem:

All of a sudden, all the fonts on my drawings are displaying in some fancy type font. If I select the MTEXT, DTEXT or DIM and manually change the style from "Standard" to "Romans" it displays fine. If I go into the Text Style dialouge box and change the font for the "Standard" style from "txt.shx" to "romans.shx" everything displays fine.

How come all of a sudden they are all changing?

Steve, you have a couple things to check here:

First check to make sure you have a txt.shx file available in your search path. If you don't, AutoCAD will look to its font mapping file (acad.fmp) to look up what font it is supposed to substitute if it cannot find the particular font specified in the drawing. If the acad.fmp file cannot provide a valid substitution, Acad will substitute the font specified by the "fontalt" system variable.

Well, that gave me a good place to start. It says my "Font Map File" is "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\acad.fmp". That file does not exist. When I open some drawings, it says that is is substituting "Allegro BT.ttf" for "txt.shx". My "Support File Search Path" for "Fonts" is empty.

I think I fixed it. For some reason, when I looked and the default options everything is fine, but when I open the problem drawing, all the paths are gone from the options. Not sure why. Any suggestion as to why?

On the surface, it looks to me like a profiles issue, although what you are describing points to a unique problem I am unfamiliar with. If you are saying you start a new dwg and see the correct paths in your profile (options - file tab), but then they disappear when you open a particular drawing - well, that is something I have never heard of. Profile information is not really saved "in the drawing". Perhaps you could audit the problem drawing to be on the safe side? In any case it is good to hear you may have fixed it.

Now that I think I have that fixed, I have a new problem.

Now when I click on MTEXT or DTEXT the Properties Window does not give me any options to adjust. (ie: text size)

Grrr...

Perhaps you could try this path (in R14. Might be different in your version):

Tools, Preferences, Files, Text Editor, Dictionary and Font Files, Alternate Font File.

Under Alternate Font File will be the name of the font that Acad uses to substitute for any 'unknown' font. If it shows a ttf font, or the drawing contains a lot of ttf, then some very strange things can happen, particularly in R14. Double click on that font name and replace it with a simple font, such as romans.shx.

I recently had a 6meg drawing with fonts substituted by Arial.ttf and everything was *very* slow; commands seemed not to be working and so on.
