Be nice Ross. I can afford to feed my furnace since engineering pays rather well. Jees, I even have enough backup (wood) to last until spring. DimBulb is evidently at the mercy of the taxpayer. No one would pay for his "knowledge". All the four letter words are well known. He does know all about donated PCs, so be charitable.

Yes indeedy! Last year was pretty harsh too. Being in the upper-left corner makes things a tad chillier. We've already had over 7 1/2 feet of snow this year too (and my snowblower broke down in December). Fortunately we haven't had much since Christmas, but as soon as it warms up we'll get nailed again, I'm sure.

I'm thinking about retiring soon, though I'd still have to do something. Winters are getting to be a drag. Florida isn't my thing though.

I recently made a circuit that limits an HV source to 40uA. It compliments the error amplifier loop when active, reducing output drive voltage, and hence, current. I made the proto wednesday, and we spent that day, thursday, and friday getting it right in the circuit it was designed to be "injected" into. We perfected it. I spent three hours Saturday making the proto that the customer will test with. I think I can handle current shunts. Mine change by mere room humidity before baking, and potting.

I am The Walrus. The last half hour was spent in happiness that number 2 worked exactly as expected. Flawlessly. Monday morning will be an easy day of potting the HV section, characterization and test, and sending the device to shipping for customer eval.

For my 10 Amp power strip installed version, one would get a resistor that allows for 15 or 20 Amp passes and still be within half the wattage range of the resistor(s). There is nothing wrong with a pair of resistors at twice the calculated value in parallel to distribute the energy either. Just keep them thermally coupled.

The resistor(s) used will actually be a 0.01 or a 0.001 ohm value. Somewhere in that range (not my original 0.1), so it take quite some current through it before it drops enough voltage to see its rated wattage. Sheesh, this is an easy engineering exercise to do. Try again, RossTard!

You are correct. In fact, I didn't do any snipping at all. I responded to it exactly as it appeared, and snipped nothing. I should have snipped to make it clear - so it is a lousy snip job.

Whichever one you pick, whether it is a clamp that you use with a DMM, or a stand-alone amp clamp that includes a readout, will cost more than a DMM and precision resistor to get the same accuracy. If I am wrong, please supply me with a make/model - I'll buy one!

Of course you can. You should know how. P = I^2R. A 15W resistor will do fine. Even if his PC draws a whopping 10 amps (a grossly high number), the resistor would need to dissipate only 10 watts. Likewise for the other devices he wants to know about such as a synthesizer and audio mixer - we're not talking high power, here.
