Backlit Star Maps Of The Zodiac And Orion

Printed star charts usually go flat and unreadable the moment the lights go out, which is exactly when you want them at a telescope. This build flips that problem around: the maker has produced backlit star maps covering the zodiac constellations plus Orion, and they carry real astronomical content, not just pretty shapes. Star brightness, spectral type, multiple star systems and the brighter Messier objects are all represented on the plates, which makes them genuinely useful for anyone keen on astronomy rather than purely decorative.

The layering is neat. A white lithophane panel slots into a gold-colored printed enclosure, and that enclosure houses an array of surface-mount LEDs behind the panel. The Orion constellation faceplate, printed in multiple colors, then stacks directly over the lithophane, and a textured black frame bezel fits over the edges to clamp the whole stack into the chassis. Watching the LED panel come on and light up the stars, labels and constellation lines, with the silhouette of the lithophane image showing through behind them, is the payoff moment.

Two details stand out to me. First, the panels are interchangeable: Scorpius, Cancer, Gemini, Leo, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius and Taurus are all available, so one chassis serves the whole set. Second, the LED backlight board kit comes as a 4 pc set, which seems a sensible starting point for this panel size.

One trade-off worth noting: the maker originally drew a dashed line border around each constellation and weighed up removing it for a cleaner look. In the end the dashes stayed, on the reasonable grounds that they do not show when the plate is unlit. I would probably have made the same call, though I would like to see how the border reads under full illumination.

Lovely stacking approach with the lithophane and faceplate. I am curious how the light source is set up, though. Does anyone know how many LED boards sit behind the panel, or whether the maker had to spread them out to avoid hot spots over the whole plate area?

What has been shared points to the gold-colored printed enclosure holding an array of surface-mount LEDs behind the lithophane, and the LED backlight board kit used here is a 4 pc one. Beyond that I cannot say much, as the maker has not gone into how the boards are arranged or how even the illumination turns out across the panel.
