As a businessman I'd go with the clients determination (probably with a signed release from liability notation on the work order) . You can forget about me eating $15 per plug to fix what someone else did, thats not good business.

C'mon man none of this covers Stormin. He said at the end of his post he hopes they never find out. That speaks volumes. He didn't tell them a damn thing. He just rigged it, got paid for it, and left it. He knows he's totally in the wrong he won't even try to defend himself. Why he even wrote it is beyond me but clearly he did. Why even try to defend him? If I had a worker who did this and I found out I would fire him on the spot. If a license were involved I would have him hauled in front of the board and do everything I could to make sure he lost it. No excuse for doing something like that. No respect at all for someone who would do it. Jerks like him make the whole profession look bad. They should be run out.

You can imagine some of the things larger shop staff have done knowing its not their name on the line. And that's not even touching on short timer syndrome when they change employers.

Some clients stay with a one man operation for years because they built a relationship of integrity and trust - paramount to long term survival of the little guy. You might not even see the same technician with larger shops, the relationship is akin to bar dating, thank ya maam!

Mechanics, electricians, plumbers, locksmith, whatever - tradesmen are individuals that answer to their own conscience ... and I sleep good at night thanks.

I have 'found' a large, old (started in the 40's) lock shop that sold at LEAST 3 different customers, a 'restricted' keyway-you must come back to us to get keys, no one else is able to get them... yada yada..

. the FIRST place was unhappy when I ordered in a box of 50 blanks, but the 2nd, the POLICE Dept, was an entirely a different story..

I don't even understand why he would post it. He had to know it wasn't going to go over good, even if most people are too polite or too interested in group harmony to confront him on it. I know a lot of people read that when he wrote it and just shook their heads. It's almost like he just put it out there on purpose knowing it was going to piss people off. Kind of a delayed reaction before it came back on him hard but he should have expected it.

Ok. Agreed. And why he wouldn't do that I don't understand. Any time you are working on something you are always looking for legitimate problems so you can get paid to fix them. Covering up a legitimate real problem you could get paid to fix is just stupid. They don't want to fix it? Ok fine but at least they were told about it and they didn't care. Full disclosure. They know.

That's why commission pay is a good thing where ever it will work. Incentive to fix problems and not gloss them over.

Looking at stuff stormin has written this isn't the only time he has done some highly questionable stuff and he seems to really piss a lot of people off. I mean not just a little, they seem to really hate him. I use to think people came down a little hard on him here but that's nothing compared to what he gets in the AC group. He's got to have some real thick skin to even still post there. There seems to be a real consensus there that he is totally clueless. I'm not an HVAC expert but most of them on there do seem to know what they are talking about and they all pretty well seem to agree that he doesn't.

No, Tim, it's not standard practice, and I suspect you know that. In every profession and trade there are people who either don't know what they are doing or who don't care. Stormin certainly appears to be one of them but that doesn't reflect on anybody but him and I haven't seen anybody come out and defend what he pulled.

This reason is probably #1 on most people's list.

I'm not totally giving up on any of those shops calling me back, but just in case they don't, I might move forward on my on and do the Foley Belsaw course.

Has anyone ever heard of people getting grant money to pay for the course? Or maybe getting their employer to pay for it? My current employer does offer money for college classes. Maybe if they didn't ask too many questions I could get them to pay for the course, but I doubt it.

Foley Belsaw / College Class :-) :-) :-) just had to laugh.. look, save yourself and/or the tax-payers some money. fb will give nothing but some very miner basics, that you can probably pick-up on the net with some effort. (google can be your friend) you are on the right track, you just haven't found the right lock-shop.

First of all forget mailing shops. Go in in person. As likely as not what you mailed got trashed as junk mail unread. 2nd Forget FB, unless you want to buy some reference material from them other than their basic course. They use to have some good books on IC, MKing ETC. I haven't seen a catalog in a long time but they probably still do. You will spend 1/2 as much and get twice the useful info.

You will probably need to count your locksmith studies up as a personal investment in yourself.

I'd also say go for the FB course via the monthly payment program. It will give you basic exposure to hardware and techniques you may not have seen yet. They include a very basic key cutting machine, a few tools and a certification. Some of their catalog item prices are excessive (tools and machines) but the parts prices are not bad.

Unless they revised their courses, you will find their material including the supplement on electronics is rather dated.

In some states you cannot have/carry pick tools without proof of locksmithing, a reduced laminated copy of the course completion certificate can help there.

Look at the group FAQ, there are lots of free resources on the internet to help grow core knowledge with, and that will help when you reach out for the practical applied experience.
