They are pickable, and a good trading locksmith in the UK will be able to gain entry without reaching for their drill.

Picking them is hard though, requires specialist tools (you won't get anywhere with a couple of bits of piano wire for example) and has a very steep learning curve.

To get the BS (British Standards) rating, they must have a saw-resist bolt that extends at least 20mm when locked, must have 5 or more levers, and an additional pick-resistance feature such as false gates or curtains.

They work by the key lifting levers on the first part of its turn, then drawing the bolt back against the lever pack once it has raised the levers. If the levers are all at the correct height, then the bolt can withdraw into the lined up gates, if not then it is stopped by the levers.

False gates are as the name suggests shallower cuts in the levers that make whoever is picking the lock think they've found a gate, but aren't deep enough to allow the bolt to withdraw.

Curtains are a sleeve that turns with the key and blocks most of the keyhole when partially turned, which makes it more difficult to get picking tools in there.

If any US lockies want to play with these, have a look on eBay! UK lock companies often release 3 lever versions where less security is required and these will typically have no false gates or curtains etc, and so are not BS Standard locks, but allow you to see the mechanism and principles at work (and have a chance of picking when first playing with these locks).
