pre processing and post processing

can anyone explain to me in simple words "what is the meaning of pre processing and post processing"? what are the steps covered in pre processing and post processing as far as a FEM software is concerned?(like IDeas, ansys etc).

Pre-processing: building/modifying geometry and building/modifying finite element model with loads and constraints.

A file of the finite element would then be generated for analysis in a solver, e.g. nastran, abaqus, etc.

Post-processing: manipulating and plotting analysis results data. Deformed shape plots, stress contour plots are some examples.

A software package, such as Femap or Patran handles the pre and post processing steps above. Some packages such as Ideas and Ansys have their own solvers built in.

Pre get the data in a form that the application can process post get the output into a form that makes sense to you.
