got the Vernon 11" shaper home

The shaper followed me home meekly today. Lotta running around but no more weirdness with this deal - pull up, lift it up, roll away the dolly, back the trailer under, prop up the back end of the trailer, drop the shaper, winch into position, strap it down, button up and head home.

Here are a few pix:

They aren't great quality, just wanted to show you guys the cool art deco base. The base contains the main drive motor on rails, and it can be cranked in and out which actuates the variable speed sheaves. The sheaves on this old gal are a little sticky yet, I've got them soaking in Kroil in this picture.

That's really pretty :-)

I hope you're going to do something with that electrical tumour growing out of the side though.

According to Grant Erwin :

Congratulations! I was afraid that there would be a much more exciting story, if you didn't have someone else with you for backup.

O.K. it looks like a nice machine -- though it does not seem to have the provisions for automatic feed of the compound. (Neither does mine, and mine is smaller -- Rockwell/Delta/(what was that third name?).) Yours looks like a really nice size machine.

The big red box is the motor switch? Is it just start/stop or is it forward/stop/reverse?

Enjoy, DoN.

I got a 7" South Bend shaper from Ebay 4 years ago for $1200 + $550 shipping.

I have not used it yet.

I have other tools taking up floor space: a vertical mill, 3 metal lathes, bandsaw, and table saw that get used all the time.

The shaper sits unused next to the jointer and granite surface with cob webs.

According to Clark Magnuson :

Mine (Rockwell/Delta/AMMCO) gets used regularly. Among other things, while it does not remove as much metal per unit time as the mill (especially the Nichols horizontal mill), it makes a lovely finish when it does get used. Aside from being fun and relaxing to watch at work. :-)

It would be used even more often, if it had a longer stroke than the 7" which is its current limit.

Enjoy, DoN.

It has power crossfeed, but no power to the clapper crank.

It's an ancient start/stop size 0. Never seen one older.

I did get the variable drive working about right (at least it speeds up and slows down now) - just had to pull the motor and work some oil into the sheave sliding mechanism. Good old Kroil, comes through again.

Nice work! I wonder what you used for illumination for the pictures? Do you have some special photo lamps in the shop?

Just joking! I know you see the sun several times a year, most years.

My 24" Cincinnati doesn't have power to the clapper crank either, it does have a selector as to whether the power feed is applied to the cross feed screw, or to the knee screw. So you do verticals by feeding to the knee. I'll bet that 11" is a big enough shaper to have feed to the knee.

Congratulations on the new acquisition!

I did bring a friend, but this time the seller was kitten-like, made hardly a peep. No drama, just a lot of slow careful machinery moving.

Maybe he's on drugs? Then again, maybe not. Some people are just like that: crazy one day, sane the next.

Glad you got it home safely. Looks like a nice machine.

Best wishes,
