how to use 1" x 48" round plate - ideas?

It depends on which of your descriptions is correct. If what is in the subject line is correct, then perhaps a welding or project table might make sense.

However -- if what you put in the body of the message is correct, you might use it as a start on the chassis for a flying saucer or a merry-go-round. Or, perhaps as a turntable in your driveway, to allow you to avoid having to turn the car around to drive out frontwards after pulling in frontwards. :-)

That's a pretty heavy plate to put up on pipes for a work table. That would work but you better put more than four legs under it; you could loose a foot it that thing tipped over.

The only thing I can think of off hand is to put the right kind of hinges on it and use it for a door on a diver's decompression pressure chamber.

Maybe a poured, 4-layer horizontal and vertical rebar reinforced concrete vault, with that as a door - with a combination lock mounted in the middle and expansion bars on the inside.... ;-} JHbs

Since you already have a round table top, it would be a shame to weld a fixed base to it. Rig some kind of under carraige so you could rotate the table top if you had something big or heavy on it, or if you had tack welded some fixturing down in one spot, you could just rotate the table for some other project.

As far as the height goes, it should be high enough to stuff your legs under while sitting in the chair. Since you are building it also consider making the legs adjustable. This way if you had a progect that was tall, you could lower the top so you could stand while working rather than working on a ladder.

"Pallet changer" for your drill press.......

I have one about 3' in diamter on legs. Makes a good welding table. It orginally had a couple automatic drill heads on it.
