Aütodämmerung -- Death of the Detroit automotive gods, or the funeral pyre of the National Republican Party?

-------------- While it seems incredible to me, the media reports a minority of Republicans are working to derail the interim Detroit financial rescue package.

---------------- Senate Republicans voice opposition; House to vote tonight

By Justin Hyde ? Free Press Washington Staff ? December 10, 2008

WASHINGTON ? Senate Republicans warned today that a $14-billion rescue of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC lacked the support needed to pass the Senate, with several criticizing the bill for failing to force deeper cuts at automakers. Meanwhile, the House is set to vote on it at about 7 to 8 tonight.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he hadn't made a decision yet whether to back the proposal unveiled earlier today. A number of Republicans were already opposed to the idea of a rescue rather than some kind of bankruptcy for GM or Chrysler, and vowed to filibuster any plan.

Such delays in the Senate could take several days to resolve, with backers of the rescue needing 60 votes to succeed, including up to 20 Republicans. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said he believed the bill has "less than a handful of votes" among Republicans.

------- email follows --------- Aütodämmerung -- Death of the Detroit automotive gods, or the funeral pyre of the National Republican Party as a farewell gift from those Republican Senators and Representatives who lost their seats in the recent election?

I strongly urge you to vote in favor of the interim 14 billion dollar rescue package, and to control the "Suicide Bomber" Republicans in Congress who are attempting to obstruct passage of this most critical and necessary legislation.

It is not too extreme to say that successful obstruction of this interim rescue legislation by a small Republican minority, especially if one or more of the three companies defaults or goes bankrupt, will likely be death-knell of the Republican party, who will then join the Federalists and Whigs as historical footnotes.

Unless this legislation is enacted now and in its present form, there may well be no domestic automotive industry to "rescue" even with "perfect" and ideologically correct solutions. To be sure, this is an interim measure, but it will provide 90 to 120 days for a more detailed and in depth analysis of the actual situations, and the "perfection" of legislation for the additional funds that may be required.

Any Republican filibuster or other obstruction of the passage and implementation of the interim 14 billion dollar "rescue package" by the Republican party on ideological grounds or perceived minor blemishes is utter insanity, given the probable catastrophic impact the bankruptcy of even one of the Detroit three auto makers will have on the American economy and financial system.

While it is extremely distasteful for me as a life-long Republican, who first voted in 1964 for Barry Goldwater, I must now question the motives, patriotism, and sanity of significant numbers of elected Republican officials, who are apparently eager to "burn Washington and the US economy" to the ground, because they have been rejected by the voters.

This is called negotiating. Republicans are always better when playing from the minority side. More experience.
