OT- gas oven repair

I typically hit yahoo with my model number and see what comes up. The first on "appliance repair parts" is:

That says it might be the igniter preventing the valve from operating.

I performed a deja search with my TV model number and symptom and there were several discussions on my exact problem. Replaced the 'suspect' chip without any further investigation and that fixed the problem.

In addition to what Joel said, I seem to remember the gas guy telling me my gas furnace has a valve that's supposed to shut off automatically if it's disturbed as in earth quake, etc. Did your Magic Chef get jostled maybe?

Check for a thermal couple wire or some sort of thermal switch to your gas valve.

If your igniter is glowing it's working. Most gas appliances will have thermal couple to sense that the pilot is on before it will open the gas valve.

Like on a furnace or hot water heater, you have to hold down the pilot ignition button long enough for the thermal couple to get hot to keep the gas valve open.

You have to love the internet. It is so easy to get answers for these kind of problems now. In the future good googling skills will be the number 1 skill needed for everything. ; )

I went through exactly the same thing on our magic chef.

Buy a new igniter. It is probably not the valve.

I'd suggest the thermocouple first, if there is one. They are cheap. Like under 10 bucks. Mostly, I think, these are found on units with a pilot light. That has been my limited experience, anyway.

I can say from experience that the ignitor glowing is not a definite sign that it is all well. My Caloric oven had issues with just this problem. The valve requires that there be a level of current draw through the ignitor to open the valve and keep it open. My ignitor was glowing, but was not able to keep the valve open. New ignitor fixed it. My oven has two burners, one above, one below the chamber. I swapped parts between the two to prove to myself that the ignitor rather than the valve was at fault. The ignitor was $75. The valve was a lot more than that.
