OT: Let Me Google That For You problem

Whomever posted the link wanted you to go to a Google search result page eventually. The "LMGTFY" site is sort of a slap on the wrist for those that ask questions that a Google search would normally answer on the first try.

It's like saying, "Look dummy, here's all you had to do!"

So... Although the original post probably did not adress you specifically, you got caught in the aftermath by clicking on the link.

If you want to search Google, you need to go to Google... Try

Hi Joe, I was actually trying to go to a website mentioned in the 'Removing scratches on glass' thread. One reply mentioned

Looks as if whomever created the original LMGTFY page used the "change it into a tinyURL" option on the same screen. The tinyURL takes you to the LMGTFY page, not a specific glass scratch removal page.

Example...

1. Go to
   formatting link
   and put your own search terms in there.

1. Hit enter

2. Run your mouse over the resulting URL they provide and notice the blue tinyurl box that shows up.

1. Click the tinyurl blue box

2. You now have created a URL like the one you mentioned that automatically goes to the LMGTFY page and then a google search result page.

Nothing to do with JS either. The easiest way to not go to unexpected places is to manually add "preview" to tinyurls before clicking them. IOW, don't click

Thanks for all the thoughts, guys! It appears to have a been a problem related to that particular website... And, yes, I try to make sure I check (make that UN-check) all the boxes of un-wanted options during downloads. Chet

There wasn't a "problem" with anything on any website. tinyurl.com is a site that builds "shortcut" URLs to make them easier to quote in Usenet posts, emails, etc. than the very long URLs that are common on some sites.
