You'll get a bunch of decent replies here for sure, but here's my 2 cents. The Boe-Bot from http://www.parallax.com
is a good beginner bot. If you are handy with hardware, and know your way around a PC, you'll be all set. Good luck.

I Finally upgraded my animatronics links-page at.. http://chrishillman.net which also has a good sized Robotics-section down about 1/5th of the way. (took months to finish)
At the top of it I made a section on there called .. ROBOTIC-ELECTRONIC-(good starter links)
