Anybody building anything?

I've got a FatCat (boost glider) in paint. First application had to get sanded down, a very weird paint. Almost like a plastic. Went to the bother to put airfoils all around. Glide tests showed it needs some nose weight, but won't finish that until the paint is on.

Finishing up (pardon the pun) paint on several 'old' projects. At least 1 has been in the build box for a year. Found a cool blue/gray and a 40% off coupon for a Company A War-thong. Picked up some booster motors with several other 50% coupons and now have to get the kid to build this 2 stage Mongoose.

Also picked up some balsa with a (can you guess it?) 40% off coupon to try that funky ring rocket in SportRocktry.

Have to get some done as much of my fleet has broken fins and flying season is upon us.

Not building yet but figuring through a design to break 2 miles going up using model rocket motors with gross take off weight less than a pound.--Neat puzzle...

I have an Estes Orbital Transport with a scratchbuilt glider (i killed the original during construction) awaiting a final paint job and my birthday (w00t blast off flight pack). The glider is my attempt at a sort of lifting body, its balanced and flapped just so it rides on the air, it flies surprisingly better than i expected and it corkscrews which makes recovery in a small field easier.

I also have a 24mm scratchbuilt egg lofter that needs a paint toch up on the capsule are a rather horizontal flight. I'm sooo close to recovering the egg intact I can almost taste it.

Im working on a staged, clustered design to fly my home-built electronics in. All the bits are coming together, it's based on BT-80 with 4 24mm mounts in each stage and a pair of outboards on the booster. The plan is to fly it (fully loaded) on 6 D12's staging to 2 D12's and 2C6's with (hopefully) poor man's dual deployent (motors deploy drogue at apogee, main by electronics). Needless to say I'm going to be practising quickmatch ignition before I go for the full load! If it all goes to plan, it should be a cool flight - I've seen video of a Loc Stovi on 7 QM-lit D12's, and that was quite something.

I've been helping my son build his Aerotech HV Arcas kit.

I'm building a clustered bt-80 2 stage rocket. Its main engine will be a E-9, with two C-6-7 as an assist. you can add another 2 c boosters for the second stage if needed. it will be used to fly an x-10 package, and some other payloads. I'm also working on some other payload modules for flights on the same bt-80 platform.

I just finished up a really powerful bt-56 sized multistage for flying a electronic transmitter, and digital player. It plays a 20sec message over and over, and is going to be used to test the range of the transmitter using different antennas.

Woohoo!

Paint is not a friend to most boost gliders. I refer you to

Actually my top projects right now are:

1) Clean up the home office / data center (where I/m posting from right now) so that I can bring up the new ALPHA/VMS and LINUX boxes and put them on the net.

2) Clean up the workshop so there's space for people to work at the January

18th NIRA building session.

If anyone has seen the normal state of my office or workshop, these are major tasks. With 60 linear feet of workspace in the shop, there's probably not a square foot currently not piled with stuff.

My family forced me to quit rocketry about a year and a half ago, BUT, I quit right smack in the middle of accumulating materials to build my 128 black powder motor cluster rocket. I just can't get that beast out of my mind.

I may have to perform an exorcism by building and flying it. My wife will have a cow and I won't get any sex for a year. Worth it?

Vertical rack.

I could do a Kosdon/TRA syle favor for you and send the authorities over to threaten to burn your entire motor collection for you in a single bonfire.

I just finished cutting the fiberglass for my 'rebuilt' camera rocket. I've got a single-stage 75mm version and a two-stage

75mm->54mm version in the works. The fins are going to be foam-core (kinda tough, considering their complex shape...) with kevlar and fiberglass reinforcement. I have to get some rings, bulkheads, and TTW tab inserts made... I'll be ordering them from BMS as soon as I figure out how many of each I'll be needing. :-)

Different subject - has anyone had any experience with fractional-weight fiberglass...? I got some half-ounce fabric for the final layer, and I'm having a hard time cutting it with scissors. It's so fine, that it tends to fold around the blade before it gets cut. Any advice...?

Sharper scissors...or try tightening the screw that holds the 2 halves of the scissors together, if it has one.

Hello R.M.R. ,

We (daughter and myself) are building an Estes Gemini DC. We should be able to finish it in time for next launch. Our future projects include a flashing led for our Estes X-Ray and the construction of five altitude trackers.

Happy Holidays,

Fabric rotary cutter and matt. Mind you I've not cut fabric that light, but it works on cloth,...

Thanks for the link. The whole point of this exercise is to have some painted rockets. So it may not fly so good, but it will look good. It's far better to look good than feeeel good,... :)

Ok, didn't you see the Rocket Challenge? Think big Marc, BIG.

Build it, she will come.

You have to produce Honeydu projects at the same rate as rockets. Honey, I have to run to Goodyear to pick up a part for that thing you wanted me to fix. They're open Saturday morning, so I better get an early start,..

Is that unusual? Birthday, Anniversary,.. That's only twice anyway.

Are fins in yet? Suggest a spent motor or the RMS casing be in the motor tube when pressing in the fins. Also make sure the body tube pops all the way back out (up to the fin root). Having a flat side on the body tube makes inserting the final centering ring a bear.

There was a bunch of comments from an old rmr post of mine that found their way onto rocketreviews, but only under one of the Aerotech rockets. You might have to look around.

It's a terrible thing to have to build a rocket around a homebuild electronics package. What's this world coming too?! ;)

Too cool!

Chute, streamer, or tumble at apogeee?

But did you stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night? Ok, maybe that was only getable by US TV viewers.... ;)
