MCAS Miramar airshow

The annual airshow at Miramar is going on this weekend. Those Marines reallyknow how to put on a show! I haven't actually been to it, but live nearby andget to see and hear quite a bit. The Blue Angels fly right over our house, andsome of the other aircraft come by here as well. Today I saw a refueling tankerwith two helicopters refueling from it, followed by another one refueling twofighter jets. Also saw a Stealth fighter a couple of times, including one passover our house. What's really different from the airshows back when this was a Navy base, isthat they use pyrotechnics and such to do mock battles and simulated bombingruns. On Saturday evening they do an extra "twilight" show that had some hugeexplosions. I'd see a big orange glow light up the sky to the east, and about10 seconds later a loud boom would shake the whole house! It must be awesome upclose! In fact, I'm starting to think I'd like to attend one of these showssomeday despite the crowds and heat.

I'm pretty sure the JATO scene is in the "Miracle of Flight" IMAX movie that I picked up last spring on DVD. It shows a bunch of footage of the Blue Angels, both in trianing, and in shows. Plus it's got footagre of how they MADE the movie, and what they had to do to put IMAX cameras in 9G environments. LOTS of safety wire.
