Anyone notice

Hi.

Don't know if it's just me, but anyone notice that Squadron does not have the best pricing on some things (AFV's are what I've noticed) (sure I do pay attention to flyer, always seem that what I want is not in it recently)

I've done a lot of shopping at tankrats avf depot and not only the prices been better, there is free shipping. The con here is that I ordered the Cyber Hobby Wittman Tiger, and within a week, they have raised the price up to $132 !!! and worse say retail is $150. What ??? Still I got mine for a fairly decent price. But being careful I got everything I wanted for decent prices. Squadron OTHO charges list price and they also say MSRP is higher than normal. What hurt, Squadron was markedly higher on everything I wanted, and you pay shipping. (still got stuff on the way from them too tho) And Dragon USA is great to me also.

We only have one local shop left. And tho selection is good (!) it's an hour away with no traffic. Which in the Wash DC area is ALWAYS a problem. Normally it's well over an hour just to pay full list price. (Crown Vic gets 27.5mpg highway but only 15mpg city, shoot thats the price of shipping right there with traffic) At this point the internet offers a wider selection and being careful, better pricing. And even Amazon.com is becoming like priceline, where you can shop for deals.

Don't get me wrong. On the whole, no question this IS the golden age of modeling !! With what we have today I feel like I'm in modeling heaven !

Ok, I'm done ranting.....

They STILL have not plowed my street yet. At least car is dug out, so I'm making a go for the main road today.

Sure. Sometimes there is little on sale I am interested in. Other times they have a ton of stuff on sale that I am interested in. I would be pretty surprised if all their sale stuff was exactly what I like. Not all modelers have the same tastes, so it is reasonable that I would find dry months. Wouldn't have it any other way (I spend too much there as it is :-) ).

  1. you have a local shop. my local is 158 miles one way, is a chain and not a military store. if i find a kit i want, i yell!
  2. you have funds for fun. not jealous, go, go, and have fun.

I had to sell a custom AR for the funds, also selling a telescope... This economy sucks work wise right now...

Still have two local model shops and a train specialist in a city of

300K so guess I am lucky. Prices suck though and it is cheaper for me to get kits from RPD in Reno or Modelimex in the Czech Republic. USPS postal rates make retail kits from the US an uneconomic proposition and Fedex is ridiculous. 8 kits from Modeimex cost me about $30US in postage while 12 from RPD was $80US. Box size and weight not all that different as the Czech kits were large with quite a bit of resin. There are a lot of kits on eBay I would like to get but when shipping is 150% of kit cost, forget it unless it is one I really want and can't find elsewhere. Sunny day here with 26 degress celcius (79F) today so being careful not to get sunburnt.

I have to go a minimum of 80 mile to find a fair hobby shop...then, as they say - "you can buy elsewhere, but you can't pay more". I can get to Brookhurst if I want to spend a whole day and do about a 400 mile rounder...

...I can get limited paints in town, and if you're into RC cars I think we have a rotating set of there-gone-there place(s) that cater to that. But it's mostly mail order or nothing for me as far as kits and aftermarket stuff goes.

Oh well...at least it got up to 57F here in the high dez today.

I proceeded to correct his error. Also, I have to pay state sales tax as well as shipping, so anything I buy directly from Squadron has to be a really good deal. Generally I ask the LHS to order it... : : I've done a lot of shopping at tankrats avf depot : and not only the prices been better, there is free : shipping. : But they DO tack on a "handling fee". I call BS. : : Hobby Wittman Tiger, and within a week, they have : raised the price up to $132 !!! and worse say retail : is $150. : Yeah, I was at a show a while back and tank rats was trying to sell Badger "Renegade" series airbrushes at $200.00 a pop, and claiming that the retail was $400.00. I had been looking to purchase the "Spirit" side sucker, so I knew he as spouting pure BS.

Badger, BTW, lists them in the $160 range, depending on which one you get.

I prefer doing business with Sprue Brothers, BTW.

check hobbylinc, they're not bad if they have what you're looking for

also dragon, dragon USA. there is a HK website for dragon that is pretty decent.

also cyberhobby itself has lots of stuff. HK site has stuff that doesn't seem to be imported.

there are one or two other places I look at on line.

and don't forget, those are Hong Kong dollars.

dragon has some interesting stuff to drill down on .

there's also hobbylink japan which has provided good service in the past.

I've found uk sites killers on postage, anybody know of any that aren't or other european sites....maybe we can get a thread of decent sites. I think I found about a good dozen once I bookmarked, some I haven't ordered from yet.

Still looking for Renwal, mint in box, under $10......

Hey Tony - I'm going out on a limb here and assuming that Chch is Christchurch... if so, do a couple named Bruce and Gloria still run one of those shops? If so, say Hi from Rob in Mackay next time you're in, if you would. They used to run the local shop here, and I've sort of lost touch.

Jerry and I had our pissing contest back in the mid 90's right here on r.m.s. He is unique. But they do have some stuff I really want, so I gotta pay the ferryman...

Everyone has got an angle. At least they had in stock what I was looking for for a decent price. I jumped right after Cookie posted the review for the Cyber Hobby Tiger, I wouldn't get it at the price they want now. Cyber Hobby, and Dragon USA don't even have it in stock now anyway. Go figure......... Kit should arrive within the week. Actually am waiting on three orders from them right now. Finally got an airplane modeling friend hooked on AFV's thanks to Call Of Duty game so he's in on the orders too :)

Just checked their site out thanks :)

Add Modelimex in the Czech Republic. Only problem I had there was having to use IE as Firefox could not access the secure ordering pages.

Ones I deal with are Acorn and Tanya is my contact there and Anthony's Scale models in Redwood. I have bought stuff from Play Concepts as well but only by net order.
