DUTCH cw-21 UPPER WING INSIGNIA

I just saw a model of a Cw-21b with upper wing triangles. Is this correct. It was my thought that the dutch did not put the triangles on the upper wing. I will be building one fairly soon and would like to know the consensus.

According to one of my references the black/orange triangles on wing upper surfaces and the black/orange rudder flash were removed from ML-KNIL aircraft from about juli 1940 onwards because of camouflage considerations. Also there would have been a few exceptions in the form of newly delivered aircraft and aircraft making visits abroad. Apparantly it generally depends on the depicted timeframe whether the triangles on top of the wings are correct or not. But I do think the upper triangles ought to be combined with the rudder flash though. hth.

I did mine several years (MAI kit) without upper wing triangles or the orange rudder outlined in black. The fuselage triangles are very small. Did it from published photos.

Undersurfaces are matt silver grey. I don't remember what the source was on that one, but it was a controversy at the time.

Another good color scheme was the captured Japanese CW-21.

The very few pictures I have don't show upper wing triangles either. So omitting them seems to me the safest bet too. Also because the first CW-21's were delivered to the ML in june 1940 which is only shortly before the decision to remove the upper triangles. I'm not sure about the reason for not camouflaging the undersides of ML-KNIL aircraft. Perhaps painting the under surfaces was regarded less important than saving some weight at that time. Anyway, the nice looking CW-21 is on my 'must have/to do one day' list as well.

The CW-21B never had orange triangles on the upper wing.
