Newbie Modeler - Painting Question

HI,

Been years since I have done models and thought I would get back into them.

I am making a 1/35 Zundapp Motorcycle, but not sure if I should be painting the pieces individually before I put them altogether. Normally I would not, but with the bike, once it is togethere I am not sure I can get a brush in to paint things like the spokes and parts of the engine.

I was initally planning to put the whole bike together, then prime it with Testors Grey Primer enamel, then use a Tamiya Acrylic paints to do a main coat with the appropriate colors, then do a wash (was actually thinking of using oil paint (burnt umber??) for the wash) then dry brush with Acrylics for highlights.

Is this the proper steps or am I way off base?

Could someone impart some words of wisdom to me as to how I should proceed?

No "off base" about it: Just think of it as a big figure model. And you are on the preferred path, when you mentioned using oils as a wash. Use them for your dry-brushing medium as well. They are much easier to manipulate, more subtle, and much more forgiving; than using acrylics for such a thing.

I have the big version of this kit and it does look like a bear to paint. I would suggest doing everything in sub assemblies and then assembling them. The frame I would paint each side than trap the engine than touch up the frame after. Same with the wheels.

Each kit is different. The answer is a combination of painting some parts after assembly, others before. But exactly which parts to paint by themselves and which to paint after they are assembled with others depends on the particular model.

In general, however, one never paints the model after EVERY part is in place.

Figuring which parts to paint by themselves and which to paint as part of subassemblies is a skill that only develops with experience.
